Too busy trying to teach numpties (Ye ken how it is) some of them make your lot look like geniuses. (only jesting). I am looking for some advice Bobo.......... At the moment I have 2 fly rods, an Orvis Classic Clearwater 9ft AFTM 6, coupled up to an Orvis Rocky Mountain Large Arbor reel loaded with Cortland 444 lines floating & sinking, which I use for rivers Also a Cortland CL Graphite 10ft AFTM 8 coupled up to an Orvis Rocky Mountain Large Arbor reel loaded with Cortland 444 lines floating & sinking, for stillwaters. I have been told I should also have a 91/2 ft rod AFTM 7 and use Airflo ridge lines (Distance & Presentation). I am looking to increase my casting distance, and I need to learn how to cast into a wind, cos just now it just crumples in front of me like a bundle of washing line. Has the squad any ideas ?

Bobo was just talkin about casting into the wind earlier in the week and has a link with video for it..he says it's quality and he's going to try amend his own casting...i'm sure he'll post up the link when he gets online myself..i've taken to casting backwards..that is turn my back to the water...false cast over the grass and get my line out on the backcast...it does work but i too am waiting for the video.... jock on the other hand battles away against the wind...with some success but also happened to hook himself in the face

A would say there is not much wrong with your set ups for what you are doing Twadugs. Mij is more of the expert on rivers as he is out and about on them more than anybody. Your ten foot is what most use now to get a fair bit of distance, and a lot of the guys have now upgraded to the 10 foot as opposed to the 9 ½ foot rod , So they can put out more distance so why would you want to get a 9 ½ foot rod ? . On the wind thing it can be a bit of a catch 22 – 22, I got caught out at Burnhouse using a floating line and a long leader, as the wind was swirling, What I do against the wind, has been to cast across it at an angle, but find using the sinking line a better option in strong winds with a short leader on, and force the line down when it is in front off you, it seems to work well with blobs and boobies on. I have been caught out a few times with a longer leader on when casting into the wind, as it seems to catch the leader if you are false casting on the way back in or out and that is when the problem arises and you end up with the leader and hook sticking out your head some where. Plenty of sites out there giving advice but they all seem to be different, best thing is to do what you feel is most suited for yourself or go for some casting lessons then you don’t pick up bad habits from others. Guys have told me they were fishing for years and said after going to a casting instructor they improved there overall casting technique and distance, Have I went to one? No, but I should, but am too miserable to pay some one, and it’s hard to get a registered casting instructor in some areas.
