23rd July 2007 Weekly Report 6ft Water Temp: 17C Secchi Disk Gateside: 2.5m Continuing cool south easterly weather has kept temperatures reasonable for the fish which are big, and are still being caught on sink tip lines or the dry fly. Top areas this week have been Gateside Bay, Rookery, Malling shore and the Road Shore. George Brown of Loanhead and District landed this 15lb giant on the 20th from Gateside Bay. Top tactics - cormorants and midge tip in Gateside. Dries on the road shore.

Lake of Menteith Fisheries 14th August Weekly Report
6ft Water Temp: 19.5C Secchi Disk Gateside: 2.1m Areas fishing this week have been the Rookery, Reedy Point, Gateside, Stable Point, Dog Isle and Roman Bay. A week which will be remembered for the size of the fish (average 2lbs 14oz) – they broke the scales. Best tactics still a sink tip or intermediate line with a booby on the point and diawl bachs and buzzers higher up. Evening fishing for 2007 finishes on Friday 17th August.

21st August Weekly Report
6ft Water Temp: 19C Secchi Disk Gateside: 2.4m Areas fishing this week have been the Rookery, Reedy Point, Gateside, Stable Point, Dog Isle, International Bay and the Road shore. Average weight of the fish was a hefty 2lbs 8oz. The terrestrial bibio flies (aka Bibio pomonae, the heather fly; above right) have been hatching in a big way this week and a change to a north wind resulted in showers of the wee “Bibionidae” coming down on to the Lake on Monday 20th, also apparent were other larger species of Bibio. Best tactics: floater, sink tip or intermediate line with a bibios, snatchers, cormorants, hoppers or a lure.

Lake of Menteith Fisheries 4th September Weekly Report
6ft Water Temp: 17C Secchi Disk Gateside: 3m Some chilly nights of recent has lowered water temperature to 17C and the fish are congregating to a lesser extent in the cages and are now staying in the shallower drifts as well as the deep. Heather flies have died off this week but the good clarity has remained and there is still a lot of top of the water action. Lake of Menteith Fisheries 27th August Weekly Report
6ft Water Temp: 18.5C Secchi Disk Gateside: 3.2m A phenomenal week of heather fly at the Lake – more red legs then anyone could remember. The fish were where the flies were; Gateside, Reedy Point, Rookery, Hotel Bay, Shear Point and the Road shore. Best tactics: floater, sink tip with dries and hoppers. Clarity is on the up and temperature is probably now on the downward slope.

6ft Water Temp: 17.5C Secchi Disk Gateside: 3.1m 2007 Scottish National Trout Fly Fishing Champion Alec McEwan. Alec from Ochiltree in Ayrshire, as representative Champion of his club Rainbow Warriors, caught 14 fish for 30lbs 10oz. In second place was Andy MacKay with 13 fish for 28lbs 4½ oz. Third was Hamish Simpson of Canmore AC (Fife) with 11 fish for 23lbs 14oz. In the 115th year of the competition, but only the second time the event has been held on the Lake, 328 fish were caught (116 returned) and the average weight of the retained fish was 2lbs 8oz. This event is also the qualifier for the Scottish National Fly Fishing Team and those selected (places 1-18) were A.McEwan, A.McKay, H.Simpson, J.Gardiner, S.Nicol, J.Watt, A.MacGillivary, D.Keenan, D.MacGilp, D.Pozzi, B.Robertson, W.Leach, R.Robb, L.Taylor, I.Guthrie, S.Welsh, D.Bonnington, and A.Dunn. Polis Win International The other big event at the Lake this week was the Police International Fly Fishing Championship. The Scottish Police were easy winners with 61 fish for 145lbs 11oz. England were second with 45 fish for 108lbs 15oz, Northern Ireland were 3rd with 43 fish and Wales collected the wooden spoon with 30 fish.

WELSH CELEBRATE AT MENTEITH
It was the turn of the Welsh to clinch the closely contested Autumn Home International Fly Fishing competition at the Lake of Menteith. The Welsh managed to net 55 fish for 162lbs, two fish ahead of their nearest challengers England with 53 fish for 157lbs 11oz. Scotland were in 3rd place with 49 fish for 138lbs 2 ½ oz. Ireland netted 41 fish for 119lbs 14oz. Well done Wales. The hot spots were Malling shore, Gateside Bay, Reedy Bay/Point, Hotel Bay, International Bay and the Butts. Best tactics were “nymphing on a sink tip line”.

Decreasing water temperature in the last week coupled with some strong westerly breezes. Hot spots have been Hotel Bay, West Gateside Bay, Road Shore and Lochend Bay. Various flies including diawl bach, blob and booby on a sink tip line have worked. Scottish Club Championships Semi Final Results – sponsored by the Daily Record with additional prizes from the Angling Cente Stirling. 3 man teams qualifying for the Final on 5th October were Change AC 31 fish, Rothes Oak, Inverclyde, Monifeith, Kinross, Pitlochry, Falkirk Municipal, Wellington and ABCD. Top bags on the day were Jock Kettles 14 fish, Andy Dunn 13 fish and Kevin McCabe 12 fish. In total the 32 boats netted 221 fish for 570lbs, of which 54 were returned. Another cold week with little wind, or north or east winds. Hot spots this weekend reported to be Dog Isle, Gateside Bay and The Butts. Top fly this week – orange blob. Some very big fish in the Lake now.
In the semi-final of the Scottish Clubs on Friday 28th the 60 anglers netted 216 fish for 703lbs. An average weight of 3 ¼ lbs!

Lake of Menteith Fisheries 8th October Weekly Report 6ft water temperature 14 C; Clarity 2.7m
2007 DAILY RECORD SCOTTISH CLUB CHAMPIONS INVERCLYDE AC
Inverclyde AC – (left to right), Ken Oliver (4 fish), Ian Campbell (9 fish) and Andy MacKay (11 fish), with the coveted silver salver. The winners of Scotland’s biggest angling team event collected a cheque for £500 and 3 Reddington rods from the Angling Centre Stirling. Second were West Lothian Fly Dressers (Bryant, Middlemas and MacKenzie) with 22 fish who received £300 and 3 reels. 3rd were Creiff Fly Fishers (Auchterlonie, Brock and Whyte) with 20 fish. Andy MacKay caught the most fish on the day and was fishing snatchers on a sink tip at Reedy Point. The heaviest bag was Kevin McCabe with 10 fish (6 returned at 2lbs each) for 27lbs 5oz. Ian Campbell had most of his fish on fry patterns at Lochend. 216 fish were caught by the 54 anglers, 74 were returned and the average weight of the 142 retained fish – 2lbs 14oz.
