Posted: Sun Oct 15, 2006 9:23 pm Post subject: Lake Meteith -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Lake The Lake can be hard going for some, like myself due to the large area to be fished, Good knowledge is required when fishing the water, That’s why they hold international events on it. Well worth a visit not only for the fishing, but the scenery and the wild life also. Ok on my first cast Rio mij tip booby and cormorant on the drop, fish 2.5 pound rainbow on the booby. Lost 2 one on an orange blob, one on a small black spider and to top it all off I get broken on the last take of the day. Neilson my boat partner says did you see that thing jump. I it has my cast on it. Never mind in between all that hit into a pike which gave me a good fight. Cheers for the memories back next year. Tel/Fax 01877 385664 booking enquires@menteith-fisheries.co.uk www.menteith-fisheries.co.uk Lake of Menteith Preseason Report issued 9th March 2007 A mild winter to date with only a few days with a thin skim of ice amongst the reeds. Torrential rain caused serious flooding in late December, and the Lake boats were used to rescue sheep from the Carse when the River Forth burst its banks. It was the worst flooding in 100 years. Ospreys were first noted on the 6th March this year (ours, or other birds on route?), and are now seen on a daily basis, with a pair spotted over Lochend Bay this morning. 2006 Catch Summary: The average 8 hr day fish catch per 2 man boat was 4.6 fish for 10lbs 4oz - up 7% on 2005. 8hr day average boat catches were: 4.7 fish for 10lbs (Mar/Apr), 4.6 fish for 10.9lbs (May), 4.2 fish for 9.5lbs (June), 3.2 fish for 6.9lbs (July), 5.6 fish for 11.8lbs (August), 5.7 fish for 12.9lbs (Sept) and 4 fish for 9.9lbs (Oct). The overall average fish weight was 2lbs 4oz. The effect of the heat wave in July is evident. In 2006, the brown trout record was broken by David Mateer with a fine resident fish of 10lbs 15oz. The rainbow trout record was broken 3 times in 2006 – finally by David Downie who landed a beautiful on grown bow of 17lbs 13oz on the last day of the season. The proportion of fish returned was 10.4%. One of the most interesting stats from 2006 was the fact that anglers at the Lake raised over £20000 for charities. Pike fishing has gone well with 3 of the 4 winter pike days having been held so far. On the last November 18/11/06 the pike anglers had perhaps one of their best days on the Lake with 1 fish of 35lbs, 10 fish greater than 20lbs and 70 pike between 10 and 20lbs. On Saturday 3rd March Derek Smith from Argyll caught this 31lb 4oz beauty. Trout “bag” targets have decreased in recent years, and catch and release is receiving increasing emphasis. In line with these moves the fishery has reduced the limit per boat from 15 fish to 12 fish. Once the limit has been reached anglers can fish catch and release, but are allowed to keep any fish caught over 5lbs in weight. In 2007 the fishery is scheduled to hold some major angling competitions, including the: Youth International, Police International, IFFA Autumn International and the Final of the SANA National Championships, Scottish Club Championships and the Menteith Boat League. More information under events on the website. The 2007 season commences on 24th March and stocking will commence 2 weeks prior to this with 500 brown trout and 1500 rainbows. April Tactics: April can often be the best month at Menteith catch wise (e.g. 2005). Fish will be found close to the bottom in the very shallow water. Tactics in the early days of last year varied from floating lines to DI3 with lures or buzzers but with a slow retrieve. Popular areas last April included the Shallow Markers, Dog Isle, Inchmahome South shore, Hotel Bay, Road shore, Lochend and the Butts.

Menteith Weekly Report 09/04/07
6ft Water Temp: 8.5C Secchi Disk Gateside: 2.5m
Some fine catches (average wt 2 ½ lbs) this week in calmer conditions. In the recent bright and windier conditions the hot spots have been the sheltered Lochend, Todhole and Butts drifts. An intermediate line and flies such as white cat orange blob and viva have been accounting for the catches. On Saturday in calmer weather the 30 boats landed 260 fish with 203 weighed in for 507lbs. “Out in the middle” of the eastern basin fished well and there were also reports of fine catches on the western shores. Smaller flies and buzzers were used to good effect.

Report 18/04/07
6ft Water Temp: 10C Secchi Disk Gateside: 2.9m
Some fine catches early on in the week becoming harder during the week in the bright and windier westerly conditions the hot spots remain Lochend, Todhole/Butts, Road Shore drifts – with the new addition of Gateside Bay. The fishery was saddened to hear of the death last week of regular Rex Hutchison (pictured right) from Kilsyth area. Also today I have heard that another angler, Alec McNee from Helensburgh also passed away in October 2006. Alec’s humour (he once landed a child’s white plimsole) and Rex’s comments on current affairs will be greatly missed.
Missing rods On Thursday, 5th April, the day prior to going on holiday, a black rod tube containing 2 Aquarius 11ft 7/8 three piece rods went missing at Lake of Menteith. Both rods are inscribed Kenneth Mac Leod Miller and dated. They are of sentimental value as they were family presents. On the outside of the rod tube is a rod bag containing 2 handle sections to form the handle of a net. Any information as to the present whereabouts of these rods would be appreciated. A reward of £100.00 is offered for their safe return to Kenny Miller (Secretary Scottish Clubs Comp.)

Menteith Weekly Report 24/04/07
6ft Water Temp: 10.5C Secchi Disk Gateside: 1.5m Southerly winds have blown the surface layers (and algae) into Gateside Bay, hence the low visibility reading today (yesterday it was 2.5m). After some excellent fishing over the weekend things were quieter today perhaps a consequence of the persistent rain. The shallow eastern basin has been fishing really well and good catches have been reported from the Butts, Out in the Middle, Lochend, Kates Brae and of recent International Bay and Shear Point. Good catches have also come from Gateside Bay, Stable Point and the Heronry – so you might say it is fishing well all over. Tactics have been DI3 with cat, booby or blob and diawl bach or floating line and cormorant with buzzer type combination. With the current clarity a high viz fly like the cormorant makes sense. Last week we received a stocking of brown trout – our first is some time (due to quality issues) and these are now appearing in the catches alongside the well conditioned rainbows.

6ft Water Temp: 12C Secchi Disk Gateside: 1.2m Our swallows returned this week. With dazzling brightness and strong easterly/south-east winds prevailing, best catches now appear to be downwind on the western and northern shores. Cold (near frost) night time temperatures are exacerbating the poor clarity conditions as this mixes the water column. Clarity is good to excellent in the sheltered eastern drifts but poorer where the wind action is churning the mud and has driven the surface layers from the rest of the Loch. Flies that have been working during the week are the cormorant, white cat, booby, Kate McLaren and Blob.

Menteith Weekly Report 8/05/07
6ft Water Temp: 12C Secchi Disk Gateside: 2.2m
A return to westerly systems, rain and dull cooler weather has brought welcome relief in the stock ponds. However the wind has been strong and on occasions rendered fishing impossible in all except the most sheltered spots. The change of wind direction has perhaps effected a redistribution of the fish with areas now reported to be fishing well being the Heronry, Kates Brae to Shear Point and Reedy Point. The wind usually means the anglers putting on heavier sinking lines – to keep in touch with the flies. White boobies, yellow dancer, white cat and cormorant have proved successful. Clarity has improved markedly in the last few days and hopefully we are now entering the period of good clarity that is associated with late spring and summer.

Menteith Weekly Report 15/05/07
6ft Water Temp: 11C Secchi Disk Gateside: 2.2m
A slight dip in water temperatures this week, followed by easterlies over the weekend with a day of west on Monday 14th. Hotspots over the weekend were the Heronry, Kates Brae/Lovhend and Malling shore. On Monday and Friday the Butts fished well. Depending on conditions various methods have produced top bags; Booby on the point of a sink tip line, buzzers and also a fast glass with lures.

Menteith Weekly Report 29/05/07
6ft Water Temp: 13C Secchi Disk Gateside: 2.5m Colder northerly and north easterlies have meant for calmer days of recent. There would still appear to be a greater abundance of fish in the eastern basin and the road shore/reedy point have been the favoured spots. Still getting a lot of buzzers but the May fly are now appearing in numbers and the Canada chicks have hatched. The first round of SANA heats are over and after the Sierra Pairs this Wednesday and Thursday the Lake will enter a quieter phase in the calendar. Photo D.Mitchel.
Results: On Tuesday 22nd in the 3rd SANA qualifier 28 boats landed 171 fish for 320lbs with 16 fish returned. Top rod on the day was Jim McBride of Lothian and Borders Police with 6 fish for 11lbs 2oz and 7 returned. Jim was in the road shore area and 8 of the fish were taken on an orange blob. He used a DI3 line “as it doesn’t get blown about so much”. 2nd top was Sandy MacConnachie of Merchister (9 fish) and 3rd Jane Wright of Kelvinside (8 fish). The cut off weight for qualification was 5lbs 12oz. In the 4th SANA Heat on Thursday 24th, 25 boats landed 132 fish for 249lbs and 7 rtd. Top rod was S.Menzies of Leith AC (9 fish), 2nd was G.Hayward of Balfron (9 fish) and 3rd Bill Ramage of Tillicoultry (7 fish). The cut off weight was 5lbs 2oz.

Menteith Weekly Report 05/06/07
6ft Water Temp: 13C Secchi Disk Gateside: 2.5m
May was a wet, cold and windy month and water temperature finished up at only 12C at 6ft. Catch numbers in May were down slightly (4%)on last May and mean weight was quite a bit lower at 2lbs (last May 2.36lbs). Fishing effort and fish stocked was similar to last year. Perhaps the slight drop in catch numbers was due to the exceptionally warm start and good catches in April. The 2 man 8 hr boat average catch was 4.4 fish. 13% of the fish caught were returned. Fishing has been concentrated on the eastern shores from Lochend to Shear Point.
The Past week has seen the competition angling pressure tail off markedly – with only a handful of boats out on Monday day and none on Monday evening. The fish will be seeing less flies and perhaps be less wise! Summer is on its way at Menteith – we have had a couple of warm evenings (and midges) and the south easterly winds have no doubt moved the fish to the north a little. Good catches are now being reported from all over, but it probably still pays to visit the Road shore, Shear point, Sam’s Point and the Rookery/Gateside drifts. Best catch yesterday was a 12 fish limit all on Cul de Canards.

Menteith Weekly Report 12/06/07
6ft Water Temp: 18C Secchi Disk Gateside: 2.5m
Water temperature rose 5C in two days and reached 19C on the 11th. The fish are not going deep yet and some of the shallow areas (Lochend, Kates Brae) are still doing well. However, when it gets warm the fish seem to go upwind – perhaps to away from the warmer water which is blown downwind. Other areas doing well have been the Heronry, Gateside Bay, International Bay and the Rookery. A quieter week at the fishery, finishing with some moderate easterlies.

Menteith Weekly Report 19/06/07 6ft Water Temp: 15C Secchi Disk Gateside: 2.1m Water temperature dropped back to 12C, this and some strong easterlies stirred things up and clarity dropped accordingly. By Tuesday 19th temperature had recovered to 15C. Top areas this week have been the Road Shore (Kates Brae), Malling shore and Gateside Bay/Rookery. In the calmer water dries and the washing line have been the best methods but in the windier deeper areas like Gateside and the Rookery probably faster sinking lines and lures are more popular. Peter Irvine (right) of Dalziel Steel AC landed this brown of 9lbs 8oz on a white rabbit. The fish took the fly near the surface at Reedy (Sams) Point. Quite a few memorable catches this week with two term regulars reporting their best ever catches - including Hugh Lusk of Bishopbriggs (bottom right) who has been fishing the Lake for 50 years. Report 25/06/07 Water temperature has gradually picked up this week to finish at 16C. Light to strong easterly winds have prevailed. Top spots have been Lochend, Road Shore/Shear Point, Rookery and Roman Bay. The fish have been close to the surface and anglers have favoured buzzers and lures.

The places that have been holding the fish this week are; The Road shore, Shear point, Cage bay, Lochend, The rookery, Katie’s Brae and the Gravel pit. Some of the Flies that are catching the fish include orange Blob, Damsel nymph, Cormorants, Boobys, Black Pennals, Kate McLaren, Daiwl Bachs and a red headed Cats whisker. The fish are in the top couple of feet so using anything from a floating line to a Di3 should be enough.
