Isle of Rum
First outing was to Loch Gainmhich in June. It is a bit of a slog to get to the Loch, with spectacular views and wild life so be prepared to meet the Red deer, When on the water started off with Knocks and no real takes until putting on the Dry fly, first cast fish, Size 16 Hawthorn fly. Then another, the wind started to pick up so changed to a Bibio size 14 and took two more fish.
Species - wild brown trout.
Kinloch river was also fished in June with no results with one take a sea trout that got off a blue teal and silver size 12. The water was low on the river with small browns and the midges were out in force so after three hours packed up and went for a beer.
Outing two was to Long Loch in July the largest on the Isle, with an easer walk in following the path towards Harris. The only climb is towards the loch when you leave the path not as strenuous and well worth the walk.
These fish were the best brown trout spices I have encountered with the colouring and the fight on a fly rod.
Best flies Black Gnat, Black spider and heather moths. Fished this with wind blowing down the loch and a heavy spell of rain a fair difference from my scouting party the day before when the sun was shining.
I would say this is the best area I have fished on the Island so far with spectacular sport as the fish fight like mad when hooked.
The difference here is the weather can change at any time so be prepared to leave ASAP.
Be prepared for spectacular Midges as well there are loads of the wee highland menaces. Always carry a map and inform RNH where you are going and when you intended to return. You must also inform RNH before fishing these waters due to the bird life as they are hatching and nesting on the Island and they can advise of which Lochs to avoid. You have to move if there are divers nesting so be prepared to move on. At present there is no permit charge as this is a wild life Isle, it is common practice to return the fish. You may well think you are into a cracking fish as these chaps fight like mad when hooked. Stay at the Kinnloch Castle and get on the hills for some spectacular wild life, views and quality fishing
