Hi all,
Need some information on the River Carron please... here are my questions.
I hear the river carron was a much better river before the Carron Dam was built, I feel now the river is straved of any real water compared to what it should naturally have, is this true?
How far up can fish go on the river carron, i was told they can't get past the big weir just past the paper mill, is this true?
If true for the weir, is there a fish pass? i went to the weir and there was no fish access for fish to get further upstream, to swim towards the carron bridge area.
I was led to believe all weirs had to have fish passes by law, so why isn't there a fish pass implemented at the said weir?
Also, is there a fish pass for the actual Carron Dam, and if not, why not? again, isn't that illegal?
Lastly for upstream issues, how do scottish water decide how much water passes through the dam?
It seems to me there could be a lot more water allowed to flow down the river carron, but it is being restricted by the pipe sitting at the carron dam... which could possibly, or is almost likely to affect any possible salmon and sea trout runs.
On the matter of salmon and sea trout, is there good "runs" or is it just the case a salmon here and there decides to enter the river individually, or is there a bulk run that appears every year at the same time of year or is it very much a poor and unpredictable pattern of salmon and sea trout seen in the river?
In my experience of the river, there are brown trout at 3/4 of a pound, these were all hen fish, is the majority if brown trout in the river still hen fish?
Is it true that the river carron has a chemistry inbalance in the river meaning there is a low population of censored fish in respect of brown trout? I was told there was a censored fish problem in the river affecting natrual breeding stocks.
also i noticed that a lot of hen fish were not spawning when they were ment to the the presence of eegs within caught fish were remaining throughout the season with little evidence of spawning taking place in the river.
burns of the carron, how important are these? the river bonnie for instance, do river carron fish use this river and swim up it and spawn or do they sit at its mouth and feed on food coming into the carron?
same for the anchor burn at dunipace, is this being used by river carron fish? reports told me sea trout are using the anchor burn and are seen far up towards where the burn runs under the M80 at certain times of year.
also, does the river carron get stocked with sea trout and salmon fry? and if so, what precautions are taken so the local population of heron (bird) does not simply eat the stock on arrival to the tributry systems of the river carron?
reports also suggest that since the canal was refurbished and a sea gate was installed at the M876 that the river carron now has a population of perch in the system, these were spotted at the weir down from the hills o dunipace beats.
the weir pools just down from the hills of dunipace are the best places to catch these new arrivals to the river, yes perch!!! also seen here were Otters and kingfishers!!!! Otters in the carron, yes!!! i've seen them with my own eyes, amazing!
i've yet to see a grey seal in the river carron but according to reports they've been spotted at carronshore or there a bouts!
what happened to the weir at larbert, it seems to be brokeen up and damaged, why is this, was this done on purpose years ago or was it storm damage that caused the larbert weir to break???
at the larbert weir i saw a 15lb silver atlantic salmon jump, but it was on its own and no sign of an actual "run".
has anyone spotted an actual run in numbers or has everyone like me just spotted loner salmon in the river and not travelling the river in groups?
a friend told me they seen a grey seal at the railway bridge but this seal hasn't been seen again. yet.
when are the larbert baliffs going to take the steal rods that stick out of the concrete out of the concrete, they ripped my waders one day, there is lots of debris like that hanging around sticking out of concrete and such like below the larbert weir.
also, we need better controls of sewage overflow thats allowed to enter the river during and after heavy rain fall, because the river carron is a spate river because of the carron dam holding back the natural water flow, not all sewage is washing out to sea, and after a burst of rain, not all sewage is washing away and is either lying on the bottom of the river bed or is lying on low water banks of the river as the water level drops rapidly soon after the rain moves away. (noted problem espeically at weir down from the hills o dunipace.
did the river carron ever recover from the industrial pollution put in the river from the paper mill and the oil spill more recently?
while there maybe fish in the river both residential and migratory, its unclear if the fish are eatable, with many of the fish caught with suspect coloured patches on them, and some of them tasted bad after grilled for dinner
finally, the permits should be a lot cheaper and catch and release should be used a lot more and encouraged.
also, i don't see enough balliffs around and if they do find someone without a permit, little is done to inforce local bylaws...
balliffs are only seen pratically never, and only at the popular hotspots at larbert and the roundabout at hills of dunipace and the pool at the henry boot estate at dunipace.
i've never seen a balliff at all the inbetweeny parts between the popular hotspots.
it is the inbetweeny parts of the river that actually hold the most fish and the biggest fish, but patrols are never carried out at many of the less obvious parts of the river, where serious fishers with waders often go, but where the fathers and sons never go. it only seems the ballifs only patrol the father and son hotspots than patrol the whole river to protect its fish stocks.
i've known people to use nets to pull fish out of the river, this has been known to happen at nighttime, and to my knowledge, there are absolutely no patrols during the middle of the night, i'm talking about 3am, 6am etc... thats when the biggest crimnal acts are carried out with proper nets, and i don't mean landing nets, i mean nets that go across the entire river and a group of men walk up the pool with!
argh, well its your river not mine, lets leave it in the state its in!!!
the river carron could still be a lot better than it is, not enough salmon sea trout and too much illegal fishing and not enough water in the system, and too much pollution, both industrial and storm debries.
