Most of these insects are found when am out and about, the thing is we don’t realise we are walking past them. Next time you are out on your travels start to walk slowly past the grass land, trees and plant life and spend a wee bit of time to observe the area and nine times out of ten you will see them moving or sitting on leafs and grass.
Did not realise there was as much insect life about until I started to look for it, you will be amazed by what you find especially near the water where there is trees and plants around, The insects change as you walk further off the river edge as they all prefer different habitats. You will find a different amount of species as you travel to different waters and fisheries and you encounter different habitats and settings. In certain areas there is a slight variation in colouration to insects this can be due to the conditions and soil types that different plants grow on, hence the variations in colouration. It has also been noted by John Goddard that the fly life may change in colouration due to weather conditions.
A lot of these insects are the food chain for the fish and the birds and its well worth having a look round about to find a few insects that will give you that winning colour for your set up. On the River Carron where most of these pictures were taken red and orange are a favorite colouration even for the fishermen in the particular area where these pictures were taken, and sometimes green, here a few pictures that help to prove the theory. On the Carron, Zulu, Partridge and orange and different coloured Diawl bachs have ensure a blank free day at certain times of the year, It is also noted that red and orange condoms and copper spinners do well for the salmon on this stretch of the river.
Mij may also give a combination of flys that work in the red, orange and green colours as he is on the river more than most.
